How the calculator compares nearshore and offshore

It scores 17 countries on one scale: 12 in Latin America and 5 common offshore picks. Then it puts the best of each side next to each other. Your answers decide how much each measure counts. Pick "Most of the day" and shared hours count most. Pick "Keep cost low" and wage level counts more.

These are country averages. Single candidates vary far more than countries do. New to the model? Start with what nearshore hiring means. To rank all 12 Latin American countries for your hire, use the nearshore country matcher. To compare cost against a US hire, use the cost calculator. For more on the clock, read why US time zone overlap matters.

When nearshore wins, and when offshore does

The time gap decides most of it. A Latin American team works your day, so questions get answered in minutes, not overnight. That matters most for engineers in daily standups, customer-facing roles and anyone who needs quick decisions from you.

Offshore teams in Asia usually cost less in pay, and India has by far the largest developer pool. That works well when the job runs on written specs and handoffs, and nobody needs a live answer. If you need overlap, the offshore team has to work nights, or you do.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between nearshore and offshore hiring?

Nearshore means hiring in a country close to your own time zone. For US companies, that usually means Latin America. Offshore means hiring far away, often in India, the Philippines, Pakistan, Vietnam or Eastern Europe. The biggest day-to-day difference is the clock. Nearshore teams work during your business day. Offshore teams in Asia share almost none of it.

Is offshore cheaper than nearshore?

Usually, yes, on pay. World Bank GDP per person is a rough guide to local pay. The 4 Asian countries in this calculator sit between $1,596 and $5,066. The 12 Latin American countries sit between $5,148 and $25,216. Poland sits at $28,420, above all of them. Pay is only part of the cost, though. A big time gap adds handoff delays, night shifts or meetings outside work hours.

How many work hours do nearshore and offshore teams share with the US?

Every Latin American country in this calculator sits within 2 hours of US Eastern time. A team working 9 to 5 shares 6 to 8 hours with an East Coast team. India, Pakistan, Vietnam and the Philippines sit 9 to 13 hours ahead of Eastern time, so a normal day shares no hours. Poland sits about 6 hours ahead of Eastern time, which leaves about 2 shared hours. West Coast teams share fewer hours with most of South America and with Poland, and still none with Asia.

When does offshore make more sense than nearshore?

Offshore works best when the job runs on written handoffs and clear specs, and live calls are rare. Back-office work, overnight coverage and well-scoped projects fit that pattern. If the hire joins daily standups, talks to customers during your hours or needs quick answers, the time gap gets expensive. Pick "Almost none" for live time in the calculator to see how the result changes.

How does the calculator compare nearshore and offshore?

It scores 17 countries on one scale: 12 in Latin America and 5 offshore (India, Philippines, Pakistan, Vietnam, Poland). Each country gets four scores from public data: shared work hours with your team, the EF English Proficiency Index, talent pool size (GitHub developers for engineering, World Bank labor force for other roles) and wage level (World Bank GDP per person). Your answers set how much each one counts. Then it compares the best country on each side.

Which countries count as nearshore for US companies?

For US companies, nearshore usually means Latin America: Mexico, Central America and South America. These countries sit within a few hours of US time zones. This calculator covers 12 mainland countries: Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Brazil.

Is nearshore or offshore better for software development?

It depends on how your team works. Engineers who join daily standups, review code with you and need quick answers do better nearshore, where the workday overlaps. Well-scoped projects with written specs can work offshore, where pay is lower and India has the largest developer pool. Pick "Engineering" above and set how much live time you need to see which side wins for your hire.

Can Opus help me hire nearshore?

Yes. Opus recruits across Latin America and sends 3 vetted candidates in 5 days. Most roles are hired in 14 days on average from brief received. Tell us the role and the time zone you work in when we talk.
