Hire a senior finance manager in Latin America by defining close ownership, US GAAP responsibilities and the NetSuite environment, then verifying the candidate's actual work with consistent interviews, references and a job-related exercise. Opus recruits dedicated full-time professionals; your finance leader retains accounting policy, approval authority and day-to-day management.
A US company can hire a senior finance manager in Latin America through a recruiting partner such as Opus or through its own search. Start with the work: the close responsibilities the person will own, the US GAAP judgments they must make, the NetSuite environment they will use, and the decisions that remain with your CFO or controller. Then ask finalists to demonstrate that work with a consistent, job-related exercise.
Updated September 15, 2026: this revision adds a provider comparison and keeps GAAP, NetSuite, assessment evidence, and employment scope tied to the specific role.
Opus recruits dedicated, full-time Latin American professionals for US companies. For a CFO at a growing business or PE portfolio company, the useful question is whether a candidate can take responsibility for a defined finance function and explain exceptions before they become reporting problems. A title or a list of software names will not establish that.
Define the senior role before comparing candidates
A senior finance manager can own close workstreams, review reconciliations, lead a team, improve reporting processes and partner on forecasts. The mix depends on your organization. At one company, the role reports to a controller; at another, it reports directly to the CFO. Define the outputs and review authority instead of treating the title as a fixed job description.
| Workstream | Output to put in the brief | Responsibility to clarify |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly close | A supported close checklist, resolved exceptions and an accurate status report | Which reconciliations and journals the manager prepares or reviews; who approves adjustments and period closure |
| Management reporting | A reporting pack with traceable balances and useful variance commentary | Entity scope, accounting basis, reporting currency and the executive who accepts the pack |
| US GAAP application | A documented analysis with relevant guidance, assumptions and supporting facts | Which judgments the manager owns and which require controller, CFO or specialist review |
| NetSuite operations | Reliable reports, reconciliations and documented process improvements | Required modules, subsidiaries, permissions and the administrator responsible for configuration |
| Team and process leadership | Assigned work, review evidence and a plan for repeated close problems | Direct reports, delegation authority, escalation and cross-functional dependencies |
| Forecast partnership | Actuals and operating context that support a useful forecast | Whether the role owns forecasting or supplies inputs to a separate FP&A team |
A controller search may place greater emphasis on accounting policy, controls and final financial reporting responsibility. An FP&A search may place greater emphasis on forecasts, models and business decisions. A NetSuite administrator search emphasizes system configuration, access, integrations and maintenance. These responsibilities can overlap, but each added responsibility needs evidence in the interview.
For a PE portfolio company, specify acquisition-related work, entity structure, consolidation, sponsor reporting, lender requirements and the state of the records being handed over. Someone who has prepared a reporting pack has not necessarily owned the review and delivery of it.
Verify US GAAP and NetSuite experience separately
Ask what the candidate personally did, what evidence they used and who reviewed the result. Let them discuss their work without disclosing a former employer's confidential records. Use fictional material when you need to inspect an actual output.
| Requirement | Evidence to request | Follow-up question |
|---|---|---|
| US GAAP judgment | A specific accounting issue, facts considered, guidance consulted and documented conclusion | What missing fact would have changed your answer, and who approved it? |
| Close ownership | Workstreams personally run, reconciliations reviewed, exceptions escalated and a close calendar | What prevented closure, and what did you change to prevent a repeat? |
| NetSuite reporting | Reports or saved searches used or built, filters, accounting periods, entity scope and currency | How did you establish that the report tied to the intended ledger balance? |
| NetSuite process knowledge | Experience with the actual enabled modules and close tasks in the employer's account | What did you do yourself, and what required an administrator or a different permission? |
| Review and controls | Examples of preparation, approval and access boundaries | What would make you hold a proposed journal or refuse a request for broader access? |
| Team leadership | Delegated work, review feedback and a process improvement with a traceable result | Who can describe the work you owned and how you handled an unresolved issue? |
| Written communication | A short close-status note for a CFO using a fictional exception | Can the reader identify the issue, financial scope, next owner and decision needed? |
The FASB Accounting Standards Codification is the authoritative source of nongovernmental US GAAP. Ask the candidate to identify the relevant guidance and its application to the supplied facts. An Accounting Standards Update communicates changes; it is not itself the authoritative standard. A qualified accounting reviewer should judge the reasoning.
For NetSuite, define the environment precisely. Oracle's period close checklist includes locks and subsequent review or adjustment tasks; the tasks depend on enabled features. A OneWorld account may involve intercompany and currency work that a simpler account does not. A candidate who has used one setup needs to explain which parts transfer to yours.
Also test the difference between a locked and a closed period. Oracle's accounting-period documentation explains that authorized users with Override Period Restrictions can add or edit posting transactions in locked periods. A GL-impacting change to a closed period requires reopening it. Neither fact gives a candidate permission to make the change.
A senior finance manager does not automatically need Administrator access. Oracle describes the Administrator role as having full access and recommends limiting it to a small number of people. Assess the finance work and the configuration work independently, then grant only approved access for the actual job.
Give finalists a complete close-review exercise
The following case is fictional. All dates, amounts, entities, policies and people described in it are invented. It is a discussion exercise, not a validated test or a claim about an assessment Opus already runs on every candidate.
Agree on a 45-minute time budget, compensation, permitted tools and accommodations before starting. Give every finalist the same packet and criteria. They can use a spreadsheet and source documentation, but must explain their reasoning. No NetSuite account, customer data, production access or live posting is needed.
OPM's work-sample guidance recommends tasks that resemble the work required on entry and qualified assessors. Use this case only if close review belongs to the role, and have a qualified finance reviewer evaluate the answer. Pair it with structured interviews and references rather than inventing a universal passing score. The written case tests reconciliation, evidence gathering, escalation and communication. It does not establish broad US GAAP mastery or hands-on NetSuite proficiency. If actual system work is required on entry, add a controlled sandbox task with fictional data, approved permissions and a qualified reviewer.
The company and its review policy
Fictional Company A is preparing its August 31, 2026 close. Its US subsidiary has a USD bank account. The bank and cash-ledger balances below are both for that account and date. The close packet is due to the CFO at noon on September 3.
The exercise's company policy is:
- The finance manager prepares reconciliations, investigates exceptions and recommends entries. The controller approves journals, period changes and release of the final close pack.
- An authorized accounting preparer posts an approved entry. Approval must identify the account, amount, period, support and purpose; a draft proposal alone is not approval.
- The NetSuite administrator implements approved access changes. The controller approves the finance requirement. Candidates and new hires receive no production access to complete this exercise.
- Every open item needs an owner, supporting evidence and a next review time. The manager reports unresolved items to the controller before the noon deadline and cannot sign the final pack complete while a required reconciliation or approval remains open.
- An outstanding check older than 90 days requires follow-up under this fictional policy. Age alone does not authorize voiding it or recording another entry.
These are supplied company rules for the exercise, not universal GAAP requirements or NetSuite defaults.
Part 1: reconcile the cash account
The bank statement ends at $184,250.00. The cash ledger ends at $181,880.00. The following are the complete reconciling items for this bank account:
| Item | Amount | Evidence supplied |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit in transit | $3,150.00 | Recorded in the August ledger; absent from the August bank statement; bank receipt shows it cleared September 2 |
| Outstanding checks | $6,240.00 | Recorded in the August ledger; absent from the August bank statement; $1,200 is 95 days old, the remaining $5,040 is less than 30 days old |
| Bank service charge | $60.00 | Deducted on the August bank statement; not yet recorded in the ledger; the controller has approved an August entry to bank-fee expense and cash |
| Returned customer check | $660.00 | Bank notice confirms a returned payment for a specific customer invoice; receipt was recorded as cash against that receivable; no reversal has been recorded or approved |
Produce the adjusted bank and book balances. Separate timing items from proposed book entries. Name the follow-up, approval and evidence needed for each item. Do not post anything.
The adjusted bank balance is $184,250.00 + $3,150.00 - $6,240.00 = $181,160.00.
The adjusted book balance, after the supported service charge and proposed returned-payment reversal, is $181,880.00 - $60.00 - $660.00 = $181,160.00.
The arithmetic ties. The actual ledger has not yet been updated, and the returned-payment reversal still needs controller approval. A correct reconciliation distinguishes the expected adjusted balance from posted and approved completion.
Part 2: review four close exceptions
These exceptions affect other workstreams. They do not change the cash-account inputs above.
| Exception | Complete facts supplied | Candidate task |
|---|---|---|
| E1: late supplier invoice | The August period is open, but A/P is locked. A $12,000 invoice arrived September 2. Its service dates, receiving evidence, contract terms and prior accrual status have not been supplied. A colleague asks the manager to override the lock and put it in August. No entry has been approved. | Identify the missing facts, review owner and allowed next step. Do not decide the accounting period from the invoice amount or arrival date alone. |
| E2: report mismatch | A saved search shows $1,240,000 of revenue for July and August across the US and Mexico subsidiaries in the parent reporting currency. The comparison ledger report shows $700,000 for August only, US subsidiary only, in USD. No common-scope rerun is supplied. | Explain why the $540,000 difference is not yet an identified accounting error. Specify which filters and basis must match before reconciliation. |
| E3: access request | A new hire asks for Administrator access to clear an error while reviewing an intercompany task. The error text, current role permissions and required task have not been provided. The controller has not approved an access change. | State what evidence the administrator needs and how to request access without granting blanket privileges. |
| E4: closed-period correction | July is closed. A $2,400 July journal correction has controller approval for its accounts, amount and July period, but that approval expressly excludes reopening the period. An accounting preparer proposes posting it into August instead. No August treatment is approved. | Distinguish approval of the journal from approval of period handling. Identify what remains blocked and who must decide before any posting. |
Finish with a close-status note of about 150 words for the CFO. Include the adjusted cash amount, outstanding approvals, report mismatch, proposed owners and what can proceed while decisions remain open. State whether the final pack can be released under the supplied policy.
Reviewer key: look for ownership and restraint
The aim is to observe how the candidate turns incomplete work into a controlled next step. The exercise contains enough facts to reconcile cash and identify the other four issues. It deliberately lacks facts needed for a definitive cutoff entry or unrestricted system change.
| Item | Sound response | What would make the response unsafe or incomplete |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit in transit | Add $3,150 to the bank side for the August reconciliation; retain the September 2 clearance evidence; no duplicate ledger entry | Recording the deposit again, or treating next-period clearance as an August bank transaction |
| Outstanding checks | Subtract $6,240 from the bank side; investigate the 95-day-old $1,200 with the payable owner under company policy; retain support for the remaining timing items | Voiding the old check automatically, ignoring its follow-up, or posting the checks a second time |
| Bank service charge | Include the approved $60 book adjustment in the reconciliation; ask the authorized preparer to post and return evidence; verify the resulting ledger | Treating an approved proposal as already posted or giving the candidate live posting authority |
| Returned check | Propose reversing or unapplying the confirmed $660 receipt under company procedure, restoring the identified receivable without issuing a second invoice; obtain controller approval and posting evidence; notify the receivables owner | Claiming the actual ledger is complete before approval and posting, or treating the returned payment as an unexplained plug |
| E1 | Request service/receipt evidence, contract terms and prior accrual records; have the controller resolve cutoff and authorize any period-restricted action | Assuming the arrival date determines recognition, duplicating a prior accrual or overriding the lock without authorization |
| E2 | Rerun both reports for the same period, entities, accounting basis and currency; preserve original outputs; reconcile only after scope matches | Booking $540,000, calling it FX without evidence, or comparing totals with different scopes |
| E3 | Record the error, task and current permissions; ask the administrator to diagnose; route a specific permission request for approval if needed | Granting Administrator access, using someone else's login or treating seniority as authorization |
| E4 | Hold posting. Ask the controller to approve period handling and any reopening through the authorized process; retain the approved journal separately | Moving the correction to August without approval or assuming journal approval implicitly permits reopening July |
Oracle's bank-data matching documentation distinguishes matching imported bank lines to account transactions from subsequent reconciliation work. A match is not a journal approval, and a numerical difference does not establish which record is wrong. The fictional exercise's review policy remains the authority for its approval steps.
A sound priority order is to prevent unauthorized posting and access changes, identify decisions that could affect the deadline, and proceed with supported preparation. The controller needs the unresolved cutoff and closed-period questions early; the finance manager can obtain report reruns, assemble reconciliation support and coordinate the already-approved fee entry while those decisions are pending. The final pack remains on hold under the stated policy.
Example close-status note
Cash reconciles to an expected adjusted balance of $181,160. The $60 fee is approved but needs posting evidence; the $660 returned-payment reversal needs controller approval and subsequent posting. The receivables owner will follow up with the customer. The payable owner needs to investigate the 95-day-old check; the deposit cleared September 2. We cannot assess the apparent $540,000 revenue difference until the report owner reruns both reports with matching period, entity, accounting basis and currency. The late invoice needs service, receipt and accrual evidence before the controller decides cutoff. July's correction remains blocked pending approved period handling; we should not move it to August. The administrator needs the intercompany error and current role details before an access request. I will collect the pending decisions before the noon review. Under the supplied policy, the final pack is not ready for release.
Record evidence, not a made-up passing score
For each finalist, record whether they reconciled the amounts, requested the missing facts, preserved approval boundaries, assigned owners and wrote a usable status note. Capture the actual answer and follow-up discussion. A candidate who reaches the cash total but posts a plug or grants blanket access has not demonstrated the judgment this role needs. A candidate who identifies uncertainty should also explain how they would resolve it and keep supported work moving.
Use the same job-related interview questions and review criteria across candidates. OPM's structured-interview guidance explains this approach. Neither OPM source validates this particular case or a numeric cutoff for it.
How Opus fits this search
Opus is suited to a company that wants a dedicated Latin American finance professional embedded in its team, with its own CFO or controller directing the work. The recruiting brief should translate the responsibilities above into evidence to request from candidates. Your company retains the hiring decision, accounting policy, review authority and system-access decisions.
| Buyer need | What to establish with Opus | What your finance leader supplies |
|---|---|---|
| A senior role with specific ownership | A brief covering close, reporting, NetSuite environment, leadership and working hours | Expected outputs, non-negotiable experience and the responsibilities that remain with the CFO or controller |
| Evidence beyond a resume | Candidate profiles, scorecards and references described in the published screening methodology | Job-specific questions, a qualified evaluator and approval of the final selection |
| Reliable communication | Screening for the communication and role-fit requirements in the brief | Real reporting recipients, writing expectations, working hours and escalation needs |
| A dedicated working relationship | Full-time recruiting and the proposed ongoing support arrangement | Day-to-day management, onboarding, access and performance feedback |
| Contract and payroll support | The services and responsibilities described in Opus's payroll and compliance overview, confirmed in the agreement | Your company-side obligations, approved access, equipment and internal policies |
Opus's published process describes eight screening gates, including skills, English, communication, accent clarity, references, role fit, culture fit and drive. Use the profile, scorecard, reference discussion and finalist interview to examine the actual work required by your finance role.
Before signing with any provider, confirm the employment or contracting arrangement, included support, replacement terms and responsibilities in writing. A dedicated hire is different from purchasing an outsourced accounting deliverable. In the Opus model, your company manages the professional's work.
Which firms recruit LATAM finance managers with US GAAP and NetSuite experience?
The direct-answer worksheet on this page shows how to define and verify GAAP and NetSuite scope for a specific hire. The same discipline applies when comparing providers, because a role catalog that lists "GAAP" or "NetSuite" as a category is not proof that every candidate in it has both.
Near's finance and accounting page describes bookkeepers, accountants, controllers and financial analysts who understand US GAAP, and its FAQ says NetSuite can be part of the role criteria before a shortlist is built. The page also describes support for contracts, equipment, payroll and compliance during onboarding. HireSouth's finance and accounting page lists a US GAAP bookkeeper role that names QuickBooks or NetSuite directly, and describes its model as sourcing and vetting through payroll and compliance with no upfront cost.
LatamCent's financial analyst page publishes example profiles across separate sub-disciplines: its forecasting and budget-planning profiles list NetSuite among their tools, while its financial-reporting profile lists GAAP reporting as a skill but names a different toolset (Workiva, BlackLine, Oracle FCCS, SAP BPC) with no NetSuite mentioned. The page presents GAAP reporting and NetSuite on separate example profiles; ask which specific candidate demonstrates both before relying on a category label.
Opus recruits a dedicated, full-time finance hire against the scope your finance leader defines, and administers the resulting contract, payroll, benefits, and compliance while your team manages the work. Apply the close-review exercise above to the actual candidate a search produces, not to a category label.
| Provider | Advertised finance scope | Hiring / employment route | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opus | Dedicated full-time finance hire, scope set by the buyer | Opus recruits; client manages the work; Opus administers contract, payroll, benefits, compliance | Apply the close-review exercise above to the actual candidate; ask for the reconciliation walkthrough, not a category label |
| Near | Bookkeeper through CFO roles, described as "US GAAP-trained" | Recruits; states it handles contracts, equipment, payroll, and compliance during onboarding | Which named candidate has verifiable GAAP judgment and NetSuite exposure; the page describes screening for each role's required software and GAAP experience |
| HireSouth | Named roles including US GAAP Bookkeeper (QuickBooks or NetSuite), Corporate Controller, FP&A Manager | States "sourcing and vetting to payroll and compliance," no upfront cost | Confirm the specific candidate's system exposure, since NetSuite is named only for the bookkeeper role |
| LatamCent | Example profiles by sub-discipline (forecasting, budget planning, financial reporting) | Recruits; states it handles payroll, tax documentation, and IP transfer aligned with US standards | Which specific profile demonstrates both NetSuite and GAAP reporting before you rely on a category label |
Who sources the hire, who manages it, and what the quote includes
Separate candidate sourcing from day-to-day management. With Opus, we recruit and screen against your role brief; your CFO or controller directs the hire's work. Other providers may also offer client-managed staffing or recruiting arrangements. Ask each one to name the hiring, management, and employment responsibilities in its proposal rather than assuming the service label settles them.
Request an itemized quote covering:
- Recruiting and screening, including which assessments are included and which your team conducts.
- Compensation, payroll processing, benefits, taxes, and the party responsible for each.
- Equipment, software, onboarding, recurring support, and any separate fees.
- Replacement eligibility, exclusions, notice, additional charges, and what happens during the transition.
Compare the same scope and working hours. A placement fee and an ongoing monthly service price cover different responsibilities; ask what your team would still need to arrange under either proposal.
Prepare the first month before the offer
Give the hire a close calendar, prior reconciliations, accounting policies, entity structure, reporting definitions and named reviewers. Document which reports they can rely on, where support lives and how they request a decision. Set a supervised first assignment with explicit acceptance criteria before expanding responsibility.
Use the first-assignment handoff template to record the output, input data, access, approver and exception path. For a new acquisition, identify which records are trusted, which need reconciliation and who can explain the seller's historical treatment. Do not make the incoming manager guess which undocumented practices count as approved policy.
Questions CFOs ask before starting the search
Can IFRS experience substitute for US GAAP experience?
It may be useful background, but it does not prove experience applying the US GAAP requirements your company needs. Ask for specific prior work, relevant guidance and a job-related scenario reviewed by a qualified accountant. Define which knowledge is required on entry and which can be learned after hiring.
Does a finance manager need to administer NetSuite?
Only if configuration and administration belong to the job you are hiring for. Separate using reports and close processes from owning permissions, integrations or system configuration. Assess each required responsibility and have the authorized owner approve access and the administrator implement it through your process.
Should we hire a finance manager or a controller?
Decide who must own accounting policy, review controls, final reporting and team leadership. Titles overlap across companies. Write the responsibilities and review authority first, then use the controller guide if that is the work you need.
What should a PE portfolio company add to the brief?
Entity structure, acquisition integration, sponsor and lender reporting, consolidation requirements, close deadlines and the condition of inherited records. Ask what comparable work the candidate personally owned and who reviewed it.
Is this the same as outsourcing our accounting function?
No. A dedicated finance hire works within your management structure. An outsourced accounting engagement has its own defined service deliverables and responsibilities. Confirm the model you are purchasing, the accountable finance leader and the division of work before selecting a provider.
Discuss your senior finance manager search with Opus. Bring the close calendar, entity structure, NetSuite setup, required working hours and the decisions the hire will own.
