Opus places a dedicated senior LATAM engineer inside your team, with recruiting, payroll, benefits and compliance on one monthly fee and an uncapped lifetime replacement guarantee. Howdy also recruits LatAm engineers and publishes psychologist-led screening, physical Howdy Houses and a 98% retention figure. Compare the written engagement, the evidence behind the shortlist and who holds the employment contract.
Opus is a strong fit when you want one senior engineer working inside your own team, reporting to your engineering manager, with recruiting and employment administration on one monthly fee. Howdy also recruits LatAm engineers for US companies. It publishes a different support model: psychologist-trained recruiters, physical Howdy Houses and full-time performance coaches. Those are two real options. They are not the same purchase.
If you are hiring one senior backend, platform or DevOps engineer rather than standing up a staffed pod, start with the candidate evidence and the written contract. The marketing copy about process comes after that.

When to choose Opus
Choose Opus when the job is one senior engineer in your sprint and your on-call rotation, and you want one partner to run the search and the employment administration behind it. That is the model: your manager sets the work, Opus runs payroll and replacement.
Howdy is a relevant alternative, especially if a coached, office-based community is part of how you want the engineer supported. Ask both providers to work from the same technical brief. A pipeline acceptance rate is not evidence about the person you would actually hire.
Mid-senior compensation, not junior rates
Opus places mid-to-senior operators, engineers and managers in a published $60-180K US-equivalent role band. If the seat is a $6-an-hour assistant, we will tell you that on the first call. That is not the search.
Howdy publishes a cost calculator that compares its rate to a US employer's fully loaded cost. Those calculator figures are Howdy's, based on Glassdoor, salary.com and Howdy data per its homepage. They are not an independent salary survey and they do not name a seniority band on the page we reviewed.
Before you compare a dollar figure, put the same seniority, working hours, invoice inclusions and currency on one sheet:
| Field | Your requirement | Opus quote | Howdy quote |
|---|---|---|---|
| Role and seniority | Senior backend / DevOps / platform, mid-to-senior only | ||
| Gross pay to the engineer | Ask each provider | ||
| All-in monthly invoice | Talent, payroll, benefits, compliance | One monthly rate | Confirm calculator vs actual quote |
| Working hours | Named overlap with your US team | ||
| Replacement remedy | Duration, cap, what triggers a search | Lifetime, no cap | Confirm written terms |
| First day worked | Separate from hire date | Confirm | Confirm |
A US fully loaded cost and a LATAM invoice are different units. Compare invoices against invoices. The engineering quote guide walks through gross salary vs employment cost vs customer invoice.
Role brief: senior backend engineer
Business problem (fictional example). A Series B fintech's core transaction service is overdue for a rewrite. The team lead needs one senior backend engineer who can own the migration without daily hand-holding.
In scope. Service architecture decisions inside the agreed migration plan, code review on the migration branch, and production on-call once ramped.
Out of scope. Unrelated product features, and any change to data retention without the engineering director's sign-off.
Evidence to request. A real system the candidate migrated or rebuilt, including a decision that went wrong and what they changed; how they use AI-assisted coding tools, and where they still require human review; a work sample using an anonymized or fictional service diagram they have to reason through.
Approved access. Read access to the codebase and architecture docs in week one. Write and deploy access after the engineering lead signs off on ramp-up.
First 30 days. A documented migration plan with named risks, reviewed before any production change ships.
Acceptance criteria. The first production-safe migration step, not the whole rewrite. Flagging a blocking risk early is a good outcome even if it delays the original date.
Ask Opus: what the eight-layer screen actually tests for a migration-heavy backend role, beyond general coding ability.
Ask Howdy: whether this would be an individual senior hire or a team-oriented profile, and what the psychologist-led screen verifies that a standard technical interview does not.
Buyer scorecard
Use this for the specific role, not as a ranking of the two companies. Agree on weights before you see proposals.
| Dimension | Weight | Evidence supporting 5 | Evidence supporting 1 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Role and function fit | 30% | Real experience matches your stack and migration scope | Background is general and misses the work |
| Screening evidence | 20% | Work samples, code review and references address the brief | Material technical questions remain unanswered |
| Employment administration | 20% | Written payroll, compliance and IP terms cover what you need | Required administration is unresolved |
| Support and escalation | 15% | Named manager, support contact and a production-issue route | Ownership is ambiguous |
| Contract terms | 15% | Replacement, termination and handover match your requirements | Material terms conflict with the brief |
Mark missing evidence unresolved, not 1. Do not score a total until the necessary fields are filled. Neither provider is graded here.
Frequently asked questions
Which nearshore providers place senior software engineers directly into US internal teams?
We do. Opus sources and vets one dedicated senior engineer who works inside your team under your manager. Howdy also places engineers into client teams, with its own screening and Howdy Houses. Ask each provider to confirm in writing that the engagement is a client-managed hire, not a staffed project team.
Does Howdy only place LatAm engineers?
Howdy's published focus is LatAm engineering talent for US companies. Confirm current countries and working hours for your search.
Do you offer fractional engineering hires?
No. Opus places dedicated full-time hires only. If you need a short project, that is a different buying decision. Ask Howdy what arrangements it actually sells for that case.
How should I read 97% vs 98% retention?
They are not the same statistic. We report 97% of placements still with the same company after one year; the measurement page states the limits. Howdy publishes 98% retention without a duration on the homepage we reviewed. Ask for cohort, period and who is counted before you treat either figure as a predictor for your hire.
